Glenwood's PDC and staff have developed our 1997-98 goals for the school year focusing on student instruction and building climate. Listed below are areas we will strive for:
We will continue our CREST Project and seek additional resources for positive discipline and climate in the building. Students will be experiencing Guidelines for Success on the playground.
We will implement and streamline the assessment process set up through state, district, and building expectations. We will work on parent reporting of these assessment tools.
We will plan and implement mathematics standards focusing on high expectations. Teachers will be working in collaborative teams to plan effective and meaningful instruction. Students will receive practical math experiences using manipulatives and real life situations.
We will participate in the National Science Foundation grant. Staff members will be trained and supported in hands-on science focusing on concepts and processes. Students will receive effective instruction emphasizing inquiry.
As the entire state of Washington celebrates the Year of the Reader, we at Glenwood will have a reading focus throughout the year. Many activities and projects are being planned for students and parents.
Glenwood's PDC and staff set goals for the 1996-97 school year focusing on: School climate and discipline, technology, assessment, mathematics, and implementing the essential learnings. We have been very pleased with the many successes experienced and how our training opportunities have provided new and broader learning experiences for our Glenwood students. Accomplishments include:
Goal #1: Our whole staff has worked in the CREST Project through ESD 112 this year. We have collected data on school climate and discipline from students, staff and parents. We completed Guidelines for Success in Common areas (breezeways, halls, lunchroom, etc.). Students will be taught these Guidelines next year. We will continue working on Guidelines next year focusing on the playground.
Goal #2: Our staff was trained in "information retrieval" accessing information from CD's and the internet. Student use in "information retrieval" varies by grade level according to our building technology frameworks.
Goal #3: Our building has implemented Curriculum Based Measures testing, Levels testing, Six Trait Writing assessment, State 4th Grade testing, standardized testing, and reading Running Records. Staff members have been trained to administer these assessments and to provide parents with the information on student growth.
Goal #4: Our K-3 classes have implemented the Mathland curriculum emphasizing the hands-on approach and problem solving. Our 4th grade has implemented the Everyday Math program focusing on problem solving and the practical use of math.
Goal #5: Our staff continues to review the new state Essential Learnings and revise our building curriculum to match. We have covered Communication Arts and Math. We will be continuing Social Studies, Fine Arts, Science, and Physical Education/Health.
Our staff has effectively used our inservice days and Wednesday early releases to accomplish much of this work. We also accessed approximately $17,000 in SLIG funds through the state grant for training opportunities (i.e. PDC Inservice with Larry Tobin on "misbehavior as the Teachable Moment").
Volunteers of any kind are welcomed at Glenwood! We are very fortunate to have such an involved parent community. Adults volunteer as tutors, office support, library, health room assistants, field trip chaperones,...even popcorn poppers every Friday! Whatever your interest and level of commitment, we have a place for you.
Our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) holds monthly meetings to plan fundraising and fun events throughout the school year. Parents can serve as officers or committee chairpersons for events such s our Springfest, Jog-a-thon, etc.
Our program Delivery Council (PDC) has seven parent representatives positions open for one or two year terms. This group meets twice a month to go over school restructuring ideas and provide input on school direction.
Glenwood Heights Primary School peaked at 582 students in Kindergarten through fourth grade. Our student population is predominantly white. Approximately one third of our students receive free or reduced lunches. Some of our students also fall into these categories: Title 1=183 students; Extended Studies=16 students; Special Education=52; Limited English Proficiency (LEP)=25 students (10 Russian, 7 Ukrainian, 6 Hispanic, and 2 Chinese.)
As a qualifying Title 1 school, Glenwood has nine Title 1 Instructional Assistants servicing 183 students in remedial reading and math. Our building tutors Title 1 and Special Education students in a variety of models including; individual tutoring, small group instruction, and in-class support. We have a pre-school on-site for three to five year olds sponsored by ESD 112. Our Kindergarten Skills room provides additional instructional support for qualifying Kindergartners on alternating days. Sixteen Extended Studies students are provided a part-time instructional assistant to implement their learning plans. We continue to grow rapidly in our LEP population.
